Like a Monster Roaring in the Dark of Night . . .

...Huricane Hugo came, slamming its Category 4 power into Charleston, South Carolina at the worst possible time—high tide. On September 21, 1989, Painter Place was scoured by a storm surge as part of the writhing Atlantic Ocean, while the “storm of the century” continued its rampage far inland, mauling the rest of the Carolinas.

The setting for the magical island summer of 1985 at Painter Place is swept into history. Survivors are forced into a new reality that brings out the worst in them and their hometown of Whitehaven, and the Painter and Gregory families find that once you’ve experienced a hurricane like Hugo, nothing will be the same again.

On the devastated South Carolina coastline of 1989 and in Arles, France during the centennial of Van Gogh’s life there, Hugo continues the saga of Painter Place. Caroline Painter Gregory struggles to let go of the past and desperately grasps for the courage to face a future that may hold the worst that can possibly happen. Her journey to endure a trial that no heir to Painter Place ever faced will set a benchmark for the generations after her.

"That island will be the Atlantic Ocean at high tide tonight."

It is September 1989 and the Painter and Gregory families, along with others, are awaiting the landfall of Hugo the next day. It has been 4 years since the wedding of Caroline Painter and Chad Gregory (Book 1 - Painter Place). Caroline's twins are due any day so Chad can't send her anywhere. Chad, Patrick and Joey are busy boarding up The Castaway, Patrick's new restaurant. Hugo is reportedly headed straight for their private island. Derrick, Chad's nemesis, is still in the picture.

A sad sense of nostalgia is felt walking the island the evening before Hugo hits, knowing that it may never look the same again. With everything boarded up, the next morning it is time to leave the island. Caroline's parents, Andy and Valerie, along with Uncle Wyeth make it over the bridge but then "Boom"! What has happened? Who comes staggering along in the rain? Caroline's waters break and there is nothing to do but go back to the Big House, the most secure place on the island, and wait! Nine people find themselves isolated on the island as the storm approaches: Chad, Caroling, Patrick, his wife Natalie who is also pregnant, their two year old son Noble, Joey. Casey, Maggie Jane and the newcomer. Death is a very strong possibility. Love and romance between the couples is still very palpable.

Once again the author does a great job of absorbing the reader directly into the action, setting the Christian conservative theme but not in a stuck up way. If you are looking for a CLEAN, conservative romance and adventure rolled into one this is the series for you. Featuring the Painter and Gregory families we see the love and interaction between couples of all ages. These families are extremely wealthy and thus this book also shows some of the uglier side of human nature, when locals become jealous of their wealth not realizing how much this wealth has helped them. The fact of the matter is, rich or poor, Hugo had no friends! Despite their wealth these fictional families are very down to earth knowing that they have been given a great responsibility to manage the finances they have been given.

"Separation makes a playground for the devil." Why did Savannah Painter, the matriarch of the Painter family say that?

As in the first book there is a mystery going on in the background which I have to tell you is never fully revealed or solved in this, the second book in the trilogy. Not only that, danger awaits as kidnapping threats are made against certain members of the family. Why? What do they do about it? Although not as well edited as the first book, this was still an excellent read. I loved learning more about these characters and now look forward to reading Jaguar, the third book in the trilogy. I was given a copy of this book by the author. That did not influenced my review. What is written above is my own opinion on the book. Thanks, Liz

Hugo Book Two in the Painter Place Saga Pamela Poole 9781632131515 Books Reviews

Another tremendous read by this author Pamela Poole. Book 2 in the Painter Place Saga, doesn't disappoint as we remember the category 4 hurricane that came in with a vengeance in South Carolina. Continuing with family drama we are captured with the lives of Painter and Gregory families. I highly recommend reading this saga. You'll never want it to end.
Everything we fell in love with in 'Painter Place' and everything, except for the big house, that the Painters and Gregorys and their friends loved, is decimated and destroyed by category 4, Hurricane Hugo on a dark September night.
Heartbroken they pull together to restore their beloved island and legacy. During this time they face a birth of twins on night of Hurricane Hugo, testing of marriage vows and family ties, struggle to maintain their Artistic Fame and even bullies and envy and hatred from a town that the Painters and Gregorys have always been very good to.
The Big House is their first project during which they discover a great surprise...that paves the way to a new Legacy for them. Caroline manages to continue painting as her family makes plans to build her a new gallery and studio. In true tradition they one day dance again on their pavilion on the sea. Join them on the trail of recovery and triumph as they restore the Legacy of Painter Place and the Painter Family..a Southern Dynasty that builds their legacy on Christian values and an unwavering faith in their Lord and Savior. Next will be book 3 in this Saga Series ... "Jaguar". The roots for this one are planted in Hugo, teasing you to read on...
